Global Youth Environment Initiative

South Africa chosen to participate in Global Youth Environment Initiative

Polycom and Kathea drive Youth Environmental Awareness to promote the global fight against climate change

Environmental climate change is a global phenomenon and today more than ever, the youth are conscious of the world they live in - a world where carbon emissions are on the rise and global warming is now an established fact. Going green is no longer merely a buzz word, but rather a necessity, and so promoting green on Youth Environmental Day (9 June) is exactly what the Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi, in correlation with Polycom and its in country partners, viewed as critical.

Making use of innovative Polycom telepresence and teleconferencing solutions, the Agency invited environmentally active students from Abu-Dhabi, Toronto, Ahmadabad and Johannesburg to participate in a global youth environment forum. Despite the vast geographical disposition, the technology enabled life-like, face-to-face interaction – literally as if they were all in the same room! The objectives of the forum was not only to allow for the cross pollination of ideas, sharing of common frustrations and share respective country best practises, but also to promote one environmental consciousness and of course, promote a support structure.

Pete de Lange, MD of Kathea, Polycom’s official distributor in sub-Saharan Africa says; “We were very excited to manage the local requirements – which made use of Polycom products, an enabler of green, designed to minimise environmental damage - for the Joburg-based students that participated in this world-class event. Not only is Kathea together with Polycom an avid supporter of ‘green’, but we greatly value the upliftment of all youth and encourage their active participation across a wide range of issues that affect people globally – of which the environment is a critical one.

The youth forum was a phenomenal success and Kathea looks forward to initiatives of this nature in the future. “Certainly we are proud to be a representative for Polycom in South Africa, distributing the technology that directly assists in the global ‘fight’ against climate change,” concludes de Lange.
